Friday Thoughts

I want to start by thanking you all SO MUCH for all of your wonderfully supportive thoughts and comments on my last post. That meant more to me than I can ever say and it was so unexpected. Not that it should have been. It was a gentle reminder of how amazing of a community this really is and how absolutely wonderful you guys are and how lucky I am to be able to call all of you friends.

SO! I am now an openly gay man with my mom! After 30 years of life I can finally say that and it feels so damn incredible. It was a bit anticlimatic to be honest, and I am sooooo thankful for that, lol. My mom's response was basically that she loves me for the person that I am and that she wants me to be happy. Understandably, I think she needs some time to soak everything in. I didn't only come out to her, but also told her I'm in a year and a half long relationship and that we're moving in together shortly. So it really was a lot to handle and a lot to take in. But it went better than I ever could've hoped for and I feel more at peace than I have in a long damn time. No more hiding who I am :) It's an amazing feeling.

It's going to be easier to move on with my life now and get BACK to normal life. Which hopefully means getting back to reading and back to blogging regularly again!! I haven't finished a book all month. Pathetic :/ Still really enjoying The Onion Girl and Hemlock Grove...just chipping away at them slowwwwly.

You know what I've been in the mood for recently though? A good tear jerker novel. Like can't catch your breath, big ugly sobs tear jerker. Either that or a book that makes you laugh out loud embarrassingly in public. I think you get the idea...I'm looking for a book that is heavy on the emotion...that's heartfelt and real. Suggestions would be MUCH MUCH MUCH appreciated!!!! And if you can somehow make that criteria fit into the Once Upon a Time challenge that would be fantastic :p Though it totally doesn't have to.

Anyway, how have YOU guys been???

I am so happy for you. Personally, the only time a person's sexuality should matter is in the dating scene, i.e. "oh, he's gay? Guess he wouldn't be interested in dating a girl".

But the best tearjerker I've read was "If I Stay" by Gayle Foreman. It's the only book I've ever read that drove me to tears...my heart sobs just thinking about it.

I'm glad it went so well Chris! :)

Tear-jerkers...not sure. I've been more in the mood for books that make me grin, so I've been sticking with those for the last four months or so, and I can't even remember what I read last year, haha! :D

Yay! So glad things went well with your mom. I hope that it brings you a lot of peace.

And yes, I am yelling at you:
EXTREMELY LOUD & INCREDIBLY CLOSE. Maybe not a SOBBING book but it has so much damn emotion that it might as well be.

xoxo

Oh, I'm so glad it went well, Chris. Yay :-)

Hmm, an incredibly emotional book...I don't know the last time I was sobbing during a book. I know I have, I just can't think now of the time...

I have it in paperback and could send it to you if you want...it's a "reality" book about walking the Appalacian trail (that's prob. not spelled right lol) check it in amazon and if you want it I will send it to you...if not.. well then read something else LOL...

Hugs! and Happy Dance! I am so glad everything went ok with your mom! and congrats on the moving in thing too! I hope it's even more awesome than you expect.

as for tear jerking, honestly practically anything even vaguely emotional is making me tear up right now. I'm trying to find non-religious readings for my upcoming nuptials and EVERYTHING is making me cry! for funny though, i am listening to Martin Freeman read the Hitchhiker's Series and it is hilarious! I've read it before but he does a great job as a reader.

again, congrats!

I want to read a good tear-jerker too! I've been on the search for one, so let's make a deal. If you find one, let me know. If I find one, I'll let you know. I'm so glad things went well with your mom. *HUGS* <3

I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!!!!!! I know what a huge huge HUGE relief this is for you.

The only tear-jerkers I can think of off the top of my head are ones I know you've already read! Maybe a reread of A Monster Calls would work? Or the Manchee scene? I know you know what I'm talking about. That thing gutted me, completely and totally gutted me. Never cried so much over a book, I swears.

I do second Trish's EXTREMELY LOUD. That was a good book.

And then, there is always the ever-emotional-manipulating Nicolas Sparks or Jodi Picoult. *guffaw* Although, I did enjoy The Pact and Second Glance (Picoult).

As for funny, I echo Mama, anything by Bill Bryson usually fits the bill.

YAY for anticlimactic! lol I'm really glad it went well and you have that weight off your shoulders, Chris!

As for tearjerkers, you've probably read all of my suggestions. Wicked and The Book Thief come to mind first.

Woo-hoo!!! And whew.

The Time Traveller's Wife. I was a sobbing mess at the end of that one.

Wahoo! I'm so happy to hear it went so well you actually used the word "anticlimactic"!!

Tear-jerker-wise, I've read two books that had me sobbing, recently. BLOOM by Kelle Hampton is about living with a Down's Syndrome baby. I don't know why it had my reaching for tissues so much but I guess because it was about the emotions she felt and it was a shock to her to find out her baby was a Down's baby. All her sonograms had indicated she was about to have a healthy baby girl. Also, the photos are beautiful. I don't know what you'd think of it -- maybe it would be interesting from a psychological standpoint and I do think you'd like the photos. But, in the end I got tired of it and was glad to get it over with.

The other is MORE LIKE HER by Liza Palmer, which is *such* a weird book. It's got a classic chick lit cover and it reads like chick lit, but you know from the prologue that it's not going to just be about friendship and angst over the heroine's guy problems because the prologue is a 911 call about a school shooting. And, it turns out all the key characters are in the room during the shooting, so for 100 pages you're wondering who will live. And, then it's about friendship/love as the characters are dealing with PTSD. Again, very emotional. But, it still does read like chick lit and has plenty of humor. It's an extremely odd book.

Yay! I'm so glad to hear that things went well with your mom. I thought about you this last week. :)

As for an emotional read, I think I'm looking for the same thing. Wally Lamb's novels do that for me, but I haven't read one in awhile. This Much I Know Is True is one that really got to me. The other one is my favorite novel ever, God of Small Things. It was hard to get through, with its gritty topics, but the last couple of chapters brought me to my knees. *sigh* You have to love books that do that to you.

Have a great week Chris! *hugs*

Yay Chris! I'm so happy for you!

My suggestions:

Wonder by RJ Palacio (I heard it was a tearjerker.)

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie (hilarious)

The Screwed-Up Life of Charlie the Second by Drew Ferguson (hilarious)

Yay!! Good for you Chris. As a mom myself I couldn't imagine anyone feeling differently about their child because of their sexual orientation, but unfortunately I also seen it happen. I'm so happy for you, and proud of your mom <3

So glad to hear that everything went well. Although I had to laugh at myself because I was under the impression, not sure why, that you had this conversation with your family a long time ago. Ah, the ol' memory.

Life is just too short to have family squabbles and hurts and even though your mom might have some processing to do I'm glad that you know she loves you no matter what.

And I'm glad your dad is home even though he is still struggling with health issues.

Hi Chris! I've been reading your blog for awhile (I found you through Debi) and figured this was a great time to say hello! I'm so happy things went well with your mom...a huge weight off your shoulders, I would imagine!
