It Can't Be Stopped

My God! Hi, my name's Chris, and I'm a bookaholic....I made a deal with myself that I wasn't going to buy anymore books until after the RIP Challenge. The reason being, I thought it would be nice to see what my TBR bookshelf would look like with the 20 books I signed up for taken off of it with no books put back on it to take the space up again...yeah, not happening. Last night, I decided to go to Barnes and Noble to get "just the two books that I didn't have for the Four Legged Friends Challenge" and instead came home with 5 new books. It could've been worse though. Anyway, here are the new acquisitions.1. Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen - I first heard about this book from Nancy aka Bookfool. She gave it an awesome review and it sounded like something that I'd like. And the cover is really cool! It has tons of great reviews, and anything set in the south that has to do with magic is fine by me. And Barnes and Noble had it at an incredible price (they're really promoting this one).

2. The Candy Shop War by Brandon Mull - I'm very leary about this one, but I'm hoping it's good! I had planned on buying this one just because of the author's name, but didn't think it was coming out until October! But when I saw it on the shelf, well...I had to get it. Brandon Mull is the author of the Fablehaven series which I love and learned of through Orson Scott Card. So when I heard that he was writing this other book, I knew I'd be picking it up when it came out...and I did.

3. One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez - I've become addicted to Marquez's writing with just one book. I read Love in the Time of Cholera about a month ago and I really enjoyed it...my review here. But I've found that the book has come back to haunt me. I find myself thinking of Marquez's writing over and over again and I want to revisit it. I have a feeling that anyone who's read his work will understand. I enjoyed Love in the Time of Cholera when I first read it, but it's really become a masterpiece too me as it's sunk in. Quite a few people recommended that I read One Hundred Years of Solitude, so I picked this one up to appease my craving to jump back into his writing. It sounds like a magical book and he won the Nobel Prize for this one as well. I think I'll add this one to the Seconds Challenge as a bonus. Only thing I don't like....it has a stupid Oprah sticker on it :/

4. Varjak Paw by S.F. Said - I'm so excited about this one! I'm reading this one for the Four Legged Friends Challenge. I first heard of this one through Nymeth awhile back when she discovered it in a bookstore. It's a children's/young adult book about a cat and it's illustrated by Dave McKean!! And there are lots of illustrations! I also saw that there is a sequel out which is also illustrated by McKean...yay!

5. Watership Down by Richard Adams - I've been meaning to read this one for ages and the Four Legged Friends Challenge has finally given me a good reason to! Though I must admit that at 476 pages, it's much much longer than what I had imagined it to be! I'm sure I'll enjoy it though.

Nice haul! I know all about not being able to not buy books, but I am doing pretty good so far in September. I am glad I was able to give you an excuse to buy books. :) I own Watership Down, I should add it to my challenge, but for some reason I never even thought about it.

I'm glad you were able to give me an excuse to buy books too ;) I'm always looking for one! I hadn't bought any books in awhile..I was doing so good. Oh well, it could've been much worse!

Chris, One Hundred Years of Solitude is my all-time favourite book. I've only read it once - several years ago - and it STILL haunts me!! Strangely enough, I haven't picked up anything else by Marquez. :( I definitely need to correct that error....sometime. :)

Cdnreader, Awesome! I'm REALLY excited about it now. I love it when I hear that a book that I'm reading is someone's favorite. It's great to know that it has a special place on someone's bookshelf. I'll let you know what I think of it when I'm done, I'm sure I'll enjoy it. Love in the Time of Cholera was an amazing book...I'm sure you'd love it. I just can't get it out of my head. Highly recommended!

I think we need to cut up your charge card! (yeah right lol)

Lessee.. I read Watership Down EONS ago..can't say I remember it except i think it was sad.

I am reading The Candy Shop War as we speak! 87 pages into it and I think you will like it. I have Candy Shop and the third Leven Thumps book (comes out Sept 25th) that I am reviewing for SQT! How cool is that?!! So I will let you know on both of them soon!

Then I hope I still have enough time to read the Thirteenth Tale for Carl's Challenge.. I hope.

Know that you are not alone, dear friend! It's really dangerous when our little family heads to B&N...as Rich, Annie, and I are all book-aholics. I fear the boys will need to join a 12-step program before long, too... But just think, there's a lot worse things we could all be spending our money on, right?

Annie absolutely LOVED Varjak Paw! Hope you do as well!

And I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed Fablehaven. I could not resist buying that one for Annie a few months back (because I really wanted to read it)...she loved it, and I, of course, haven't got to it yet.

I'll have to add the Brandon Mull, Fablehaven books to my Cardathon list. It's good to know that you enjoyed them. :) That list keeps getting longer and longer as I realize that so many of the books I was going to read anyway work for that one as well.

I just finished Speaker for the Dead, and I'll be posting my review later today or maybe tomorrow.

In addition, I finished Tale of Despereaux. Loved it :) I'm so so so happy I won it. And I'll be posting that review when I can too.

Oh, yeah. I'm right there with you!! A 12-step program is probably necessary...as long as you add CHALLENGES to the list of addictions!

I stopped by Borders the other day and picked up Angel of Darkness by de Lint, A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray and a couple of cozy mysteries!! I really need to find the urge to resist one of these days!

JP, I never help :p It's such a cool book! It's packed with McKean illustrations and they're great!

Deslily, I actually didn't charge these! LOL So no more debt this time. You're starting to get just as bad as me, lol...

How cool that you got Candy Shop wars! Glad you think I'll like it. I'm looking forward to it. And you have plenty of time for The Thirteenth Tale. It's not even October yet!

Debi, You're right, there are much, much worse addictions, so books aren't that bad :) Though I could learn to do without my nicotine and caffeine addictions!

Glad to hear Annie read Varjak Paw and liked it! I hadn't even heard of it! Now I'm really looking forward to it.

Fablehaven is SO good. Did you get both books? Because you have to read the second one after the first ;)

Becky, The Fablehaven books are so good! I really enjoyed them, and they'd be great books for kids too...though certain parts would've given me nightmares as a kid I'm sure ;) My list is getting so long for the Cardathon too!!

Ah, you just finished two great ones :D My favorite book, and one of my favorite children's books. So glad you enjoyed Despereaux :) It's just an all around great book!

Stephanie, We definitely need a "challenge" portion of the program...but part of it is wanting help, and I'm not really sure that I do :p Great buys! Hope you enjoy the deLint! I love his writing.

It's a sickness really! lol

One of these days I'm going to read my copy of Watership Down.

Chris, I completely understand your feelings about Garcia Marquez! I absolutely loved Love in the Time of Cholera, and am going to start One Hundred Years of Solitude very soon. My husband just finished it and loved it, so I'm going to be happy to reimmerse myself in his writing, too.

Bookfool said...

Oooh, pretties!! Aside from the fact that I loved the book, isn't Garden Spells gorgeous? I just love that cover.

100 Years of Solitude was a bit of a trudge, but I still loved it. I have a feeling you will, too. Watership Down is around here, somewhere - still haven't read it. Shameful. The other two are new to me. I'm going to resist looking them up, tonight. Fortunately, I'm too tired. :)

Chris, It really is a sickness...but I'm hoping there's no cure :p

Robin, I just haven't been able to get Love in the Time of Cholera out of my head, so I had to go pick up some more Marquez. Glad to see we'll be reading it around the same time! It sounds like another great one...and it's a good sign that your husband enjoyed it!

Bookfool, The cover is so cool. Awesome image. I loved it on your post and it's even better in person!

I'm sure I'll like the Marquez book. Love in the Time of Cholera was a trudge for me too, but it's one of those books that I'm just in love with now that I'm finished it and can sit back and reflect on it and take it all in....the language, the atmosphere, the characters...just an amazing book!

I'm guessing that The Candy Shop War and Varjak Paw wouldn't be your cup of tea ;) But who knows, maybe you'd love them! But I know that I don't need to be adding to your piles, so no need to rush out to look them up ;)

MWAHAHA!

*ahem*

Book addicts unite! And head straight for the bookstore...

Seriously, sometimes I think the only reason I'm not dead broke is because I get review copies of enough books to keep me busy much of the time.

chrisa511 said...

Heather, I really need to get more involved in this review copy thing ;) I've only received 2 ARCs and I was so excited! Free books! lol...I really don't mind spending the money on them though, I enjoy it when I can. I love seeing all of my books on the shelf. It's a healthy habit in the long run....I suppose...

Watership Down is a great book. I think. I read it way back in Junior High School, so my memory may be a bit iffy...

And doesn't Nancy recommend the greatest books?

chrisa511 said...

CJ, Glad to hear that Watership Down is a good one! At least that you think so ;) I'm looking forward to it! I can't wait to read Garden Spells, Nancy's reviews are always so good and I don't pick up the books that she reviews often enough, but they always sound so great! I don't know how she finds all these little treasures!

Hmmm, Varjak Paw, we wants it my precious....

chrisa511 said...

Stormfilled, I can't stop flipping through the pages of that one! I feel like I already know the story just from the illustrations and I haven't even read it yet. It's beautiful ;)

Ana S. said...

Hello, my name is Ana and I'm a bookaholic too. I've been in the UK for 2 days and already I have 4 books... one of which is also Watership Down. Taking all the books I get while I'm here back home in 5 months is going to be interesting :P

I can't wait to see what you think of One Hundred Years of Solitude. It really is a magical book.

chrisa511 said...

Nymeth, Hmmm, that's an average of 2 books per day. So lets see, after 5 months, that should be...LOL! Good luck finding luggage that will fit all of that! Hope everything's good over there! I'm looking forward to 100 Years of Solitude. Will probably read it in November.

Believe me, I certainly sympathize with your lack of control! Varjack Paw is one of those books that I have looked at several times in the store and almost walked out with just because I love the look of it. Looking forward to your review of it.

chrisa511 said...

Carl, I don't know how I hadn't heard of Varjak Paw before...well, I guess it's impossible to have heard of every book written, huh? It looks great though! Looking forward to it.

Lightheaded said...

It's my first time to comment here. I've been lurking at some book blogs for quite sometime now and your blog's one of my occasional haunts.

I loved Varjak Paw! Well actually I was taken in by the cover. I sometimes buy books because of the cover, then again I sometimes buy books for no reason at all. At least I got Varjak on sale. And Dave McKean illustrated it. But I'm rambling. I hope you enjoy reading it.

I'm reading the sequel titled The Outlaw Varjak Paw, still illustrated by Mr. McKean.

chrisa511 said...

Lightheaded, Thanks for coming out of the shadows ;) Good to have you here! I'm really looking forward to Varjak Paw and I'm sure I'll be picking up the sequel. I'm a huge Dave McKean fan and that's what pretty much sealed the deal for me with this book. Glad to hear that you enjoyed it. It's always comforting to go into a book knowing that others have liked it!
