Getting A Little Better

So today has been a much better day so far. My skills as a counselor were put to the test this morning and I'd say I passed. One of the social workers was out today which left me to fill her position for the day. How nerve wracking! I always have my supervisor there to help me out. Well today I didn't and I think I did fine. Did the process group (which I'm used to doing by myself), got all my discharge plans done, set up family sessions, ran a couple of family sessions and just all in all had a pretty good day. Very busy day, but good nonetheless.

I find that I like it when things are busy. I'd take busy any day over bored. When I'm at work, no matter where that may be, I am just not a fan of idle time. The day progresses faster and I get a certain feeling of accomplishment knowing that everything's been done. I feel like if I'm not busy, that means I'm falling behind...a feeling that just overwhelms me too much. I need to be on top of things. This is sort of a theme of my day to day life. Whether at work, at school, or at home, I'm always doing something. Though I must say, I've learned to enjoy idle time at home a little more than I used to.

Right now, I'm filling my idle time by reading Orson Scott Card's Hart's Hope for the once upon a time challenge. It's wonderful so far. It amazes me how great of an author Card is. I've read about 30 of his books now and have not been disappointed by a single one. Now that's rare, though I feel the same way about Neil Gaiman. Every time I jump into a Card book, I think "it'll be good, but won't be as good as some others." You figure there's got to be a mess up somewhere in there. But there's not. Not only are all of his books great, but they even exceed my expectations. My favorite thing about Card is his character development. He has the greatest ability of any author I've read to create real, human characters...characters that we feel for and relate to. Can't wait to finish this one, though at the same time, I wish it were longer. Review should be coming in the next couple of days.

Ok, Orson Scott Card. Name a book that I (or one) should read that's not Ender's Game (I already read that). I'm not sure where to start (continue) with him.

Glad you're feeling better.

Glad you had a great day! I've only read two OSC books (yeah, yeah Ender's Game is one of them) so I'll be watching for your answer to the hotty, above.

If you want to continue the Ender series, I highly recommend Speaker For The Dead. My favorite book of his hands down. My two other favorites are Magic Street and Enchantment. Magic Street is an urban fantasy that takes place in part in Shakespeares A Midsummer Night's Dream with Puck as a main character. Enchantment is an amazing retelling of the sleeping beauty fairytale with a sort of time travel twist to it. Beautiful story.

Other great ones are Pastwatch: The Redemption of Christopher Columbus for some sci-fi historical fiction, Lovelock written with Kidd if you're looking for the diary of a monkey in space, and the Alvin Maker and Homecoming series are both great if you're looking for a new series. He's also in the middle of a Women of Genesis biblical fiction series and the first 3 books have been published. Starts with Sarah.

So much great stuff from him! Let me know what you like and I can make better suggestions. But there's plenty for a start! Enjoy.

I've only read Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead. Orson Scott Card is good-I'm going to look up Magic Street and Enchantment. I'd take busy over bored at work too.

Glad you're feeling better.

I too like it when work is busy enough to make the day rush by. I like it to be much slower, and less busy, at home though.

Look forward to reading your OSC review.

Aichaku, I really think you'd like both of those books. Excellent!

Carl, I'm the same...slow is good at home these days though I still find myself getting bored with just laying around. But that's what books are for!
