What I've Been Up To

What's that sound? Oh that's the sound of crickets chirping....I'm surprised the crickets haven't died since this space has been dead for so long :p I didn't want the whole month of March to pass without a single post on the blog, so I thought I'd write up a post mostly for myself just documenting life. I have a feeling that's what this blog is going to start evolving into. I think the reason I've shied away from blogging recently is that I just feel overwhelmed lately when it comes to writing about books. I've read almost nothing but comics this year with a few other books mixed in, but my reading has taken a turn more towards "I just want to READ and not write about it." But then there are the books that I do want to share with the world too. I just need to start giving myself permission to do just that and find the right balance of doing it.

My reading has really been awful lately because I have a new baby!! Those of you who follow me on instagram surely know about this already due to the flood of pictures :p My sister got the most adorable and sweet little puppy (though he can be a little shit at times) about a month ago, but he wasn't working out for her. After I met him I could NOT let him go anywhere outside of our family and I've been wanting a little fur baby for awhile now, so I'm now the oh so proud and oh so tired owner of little Burch. He was named by my sister after her favorite designer, Tory Burch *rolls eyes* but I think his name is adorable and fits his personality, so I'm keeping it. Here, look at his cuteness!

He's a little Shorkie! A mix between a Shih Tzu and a Yorkie. He's extremely playful and affectionate, thinks he's about 10 times the size that he is and oh so smart! He plays fetch like a pro already, has learned how to sit and give me his paw, is almost completely house trained and sleeps all through the night at 10 weeks old. I really couldn't have asked for a better puppy! We're still working on biting, which I remember all too well from the last puppy I had in my life....I can't wait until I have that under control and he's still learning the places in the house that he can't go and there are still a few potty issues. And today I had a wonderful surprise...I keep him in my kitchen during the day with gates up on the entrances. Well I normally wait outside to see how long he barks once I leave and he normally calms down after about a minute. Well today after about 30 seconds I hear him scratching at the front door! I have no clue how he got out...the gate was still in place. The only thing I can think of is he got so excited he was able to jump up and pull himself over the gate....he IS a high jumper. So I'm dreading what I'm going to come home to if he got over the gate again :/

Needless to say, Cesar Millan has become my best friend lately :p Aside from life with a dog, I've been putting my energy into starting to look for another job and another place to live. Both are things that are long overdue. I live about 45 minutes away from my family and job right now and I want to move back to the city I think and somewhere where I can have a yard for Burch too. I think I'm going to focus on moving first and then start the job hunt. I'm LONG overdue for a new job. I could talk about that for days.

As for reading, like I said, it's been pretty awful since getting Burch. He gets all of my spare time these days. But I've been listening to Jandy Nelson's I'll Give You the Sun on audio, which won the Printz and OMG it's such an amazing book!! And the audio is really great. Such a special and unique book and so deserving of the Printz it won. And I'm reading Cesar Millan's How to Raise the Perfect Dog :p Which isn't just practical, but actually quite good!

So that's it for me! What's going on with everyone else?

I'd been wondering why you were so quiet. A puppy!!!! Oh, he's so cute. How fun. (Didn't you have a cat?)

You have no idea how badly I want to meet Burch!!! Almost as badly as I want to see you again!!! God, I so wish we could come down there this summer...
And you know, you need to do what you want to do with your blog. But that doesn't stop me from wishing you'd blog more. I miss your posts!!! Even if it's stuff we've already talking about through emails. I just get so damn excited when I see "dream-stuff" in my reader! Don't worry--I'm truly not trying you into blogging more. Just telling it like it is. :)

A new home and a new job? Those will both be really fun! I hope you find them without too much stress! It's time to relax with cutie Burch. :)

I saw Burch on Instagram. He is adorable! I am in full-on puppy mode right now, and those pictures definitely make me want to get another one!

Oh my GOD, he could not be cuter! Is it possible he wriggled out between the bars of the gate? My parents' and sister's puppies proved startlingly adept at turning themselves into little puppy puddles and oozing between bar gaps that would not initially appear to be wide enough for them. Of course, once she was too big to do THAT, my parents' dog figured out a way to wriggle the gate bars out of their sockets and make slightly larger gaps through which to escape. Dogs!

I am coming to America for the express purpose of playing with that puppy. He is the cutest. And uh, to see you, of course. :P I just have to win Lotto first.

Burch is the cutest damn puppy! lol..
you don't know how many times I wanted to send an email because I didn't see you anywhere for so long.. to be honest I was afraid I'd get bad news and I don't want bad news where "my son" (and now grandson) are concerned!!

Whatever you do with moving and a job do not (DO NOT) let it stress you out! take a break and play with Burch anytime you begin to feel stressed!

x0x0x0x0 have missed you terribly!
love mama

Burch is so adorable! Too adorable for words really. :D

But, um, may I suggest dumping Cesar Milan? And befriending Patricia McConnell & Pat Miller instead? It turns out a lot of the dominance theory/alpha stuff/punishment as training approach is based on old research that scientists have now proven wrong. Both of the authors I mention do a great job of explaining this, as well as explaining a really fun & effective, positive training approach. McConnell (who has a PhD in animal behavior) has a blog too: http://www.patriciamcconnell.com/theotherendoftheleash/. And a section on her website about dominance stuff: http://www.patriciamcconnell.com/dominance-theories. That way you can read for yourself & decide. :)

I'll take off my bossy pants now! Sorry about that; once an older sister, always an older sister. I just want to make sure you & Burch have the best possible relationship! Before I got Thistle, I thought such dominance theories were the best approach (I'd read a dog training book when I was younger & used those methods on my childhood dog). I feel so lucky that I read McConnell's The Other End of the Leash and learned more about it, because I'm sure Thistle would have reacted to such training by becoming more nervous & scared, albeit well behaved. The positive training methods let me have just as well behaved a dog, and one who has also blossomed into her true personality & feels very comfortable and safe with me. Not to mention, it's so much more fun for *me* to train with a clicker & treats than a choke collar! The Pat Miller book The Power of Positive Dog Training is wonderfully specific, including a schedule of what to teach when for a six-week dog obedience at-home course. I can't recommend it & the McConnell books highly enough!

Seriously getting off my soapbox now. ;)

Ohmygosh, Burch is so stinking cute! I'm glad you've got a fur friend and happy to see you posting. I don't care what you post; it's just nice to see anything at all from you. I'm having kind of a crap reading year, myself, quantity-wise. I decided to slow my reading down and savor but instead ended up reading better books but periodically throwing myself into a gigantic slump. Oh, well. Can't win 'em all. :)

BTW, I have not forgotten about you. I haven't been to the post office but I've got a box for you. It's just a matter of addressing it and getting it out the door. I'll try to get that done quickly so it doesn't end up between addresses.

Hope your house hunt is an easy one and you find someplace that's perfect for you and your new fur buddy.
