I'm wondering if this blog was the best place to post this series of posts :p I know this has traditionally been known as a book blog, so my taste in music is probably NOT what most people listen to, but I thought I'd try something different by posting these here this year instead of tumblr....thought some people might discover some new music. I'm hoping I'm not writing those posts though that end up just crowding people's Google Reader :/ Seriously guys....you can tell me to shut up and I will move these over to the tumblr blog! But for now, we'll go another week over here on Stuff as Dreams are Made on because seriously, I think you all should know about this album :p
I'm talking about Regina Spektor. The amazingly quirky, beautiful, always surprising Regina Spektor. I say surprising because that's what I've found I love about her music so much. She will throw me off guard with every album that she makes. It never fails. I'll be listening and bopping my head and having fun with a song and then she'll hit me like a ton of bricks with some type of amazing lyrics or some inflection in her voice that only she can do.
What's most unique about Regina Spektor is her ability to do this. To constantly take you off guard, yet put together an album that's so cohesive and so uniquely hers. She's certainly instantly identifiable. She has a voice like no one else and surprisingly it never did have to grow on me. I loved her voice from the second I heard it.
I have to admit there's one song on this album that I absolutely hate...otherwise it would've been much higher on this list than number 17...and that's "Oh Marcello" which is part her own song and part a cover of "Please Don't Let Me Be Understood". I won't subject you to that song...if you want to hear that, go search for it, but don't judge her by that song...instead, I recommend past songs like "Eet", "Laughing With", "Samson", "Fidelity" and "Fields Below"...that's the Regina Spektor I love.
Her new album has plenty of songs that'll be added to that above list. Here's just one song that's an example of that...this is the video for "All the Rowboats." LOVE this song!! And she looks so beautiful in the video :) As always, if this sounds like something you'd like to own a copy of, just leave me a comment letting me know! You can comment on as many albums as I post! At the end of the month I'll pick someone to win an album that they've commented on. NO ONE wanted an album from August...so if September is anything like that, your chances are pretty good at winning ;)
#18 - Yeasayer - Fragrant World
#19 - Rihanna - Talk That Talk
#20 - Diplo - Express Yourself (EP)

I love her!!!!
hey, a blog (book blog or not) should show different parts of the "author"!..but that's just my thought about it, and I'm not into music much these days but I like to know what you like!
I love her voice, too! I like her quite a lot, but honestly haven't listened to her all that much. I don't know why I'm not in the habit of listening to music more than I do. Sad, isn't it? Anyway, Annie absolutely adores her, but I don't think she has this album. This is the first time I've heard this song--and I LOVE it!!!
Regina Spektor is one of those artists I've heard of, but not heard that much by. Really like the song you posted though.
Have to see if there is much of her stuff on Spotify and listen to her a bit more! :D
Ahh I'm pretty sure I have all of her albums except this one and 11:11!! All the Rowboats is such a pretty song. <3
I guess I'm out of it. I've never hear of her but I liked the song a lot and would like to hear more. Thanks for the giveaway.
And if I can post recipes and photos on my "book" blog you can post about music. :)
She has a great sound! My music knowledge is currently limited to whatever our local station plays, which is pretty much the same twenty songs over and over again. This is why I've switched to audiobooks! :) Thanks for posting this so I could learn a little something about some great music outside of the normal "radio"box.
I'm so boring when it comes to music. That's an interesting song. Can't say it was my "thing" but I'm glad you posted it. I like the change of pace.
OH, WOW. I almost never fall in love with songs the first time I listen to them, but I totally did so here. I'll have to seek out more of Regina Spektor's music.
She's a favorite and has been for a long time, a gift from Jenn See. I always think of her when I hear Regina Spektor.
Talk about weird, serendipitous coincidences, I am sitting here listening to Regina Spektor being interviewed on NPR and I popped over here and found this. If you haven't heard the interview, you should listen, it is great:

She is a really interesting, creative and delightful singer. And her talking voice surprises me but I love it too.
